Rights
When states sign and later ratify (give official government endorsement)
to individual human rights treaties of which there are many, the
state assumes the obligation to report periodically (every few years)
to the treaty Body established to monitor that particular treaty.
Increasingly, NGOs are being encouraged to submit reports on progress
made, on negative happenings, and on issues still needing attention.
These reports will be considered by the treaty Body in conjunction
with the state report and public feedback given to the state. These
events offer special opportunities for NGO/citizen involvement in
the ongoing work of the UN.
